As a beginner it is recommended that you keep your repetitions between 8-12. This method will induce both muscle and strength gains whilst not performing too many reps to hinder your form. Likewise, your chosen weights should reflect this. Challenging enough for you to finish the set safely but not so heavy that your form is compromised. In most cases 2-3 sets is a good starting point for a beginner.
