This is very much down to personal preference. When I work out I like to stick my music in and get on with it, keeping my workouts efficient whilst enjoying my own company.
However, for many people having a gym buddy can provide more than just an opportunity to catch up on the latest gossip. It can make workouts more motivating as well as provide an opportunity to gain feedback whilst training. Training with a partner can also allow you to do exercises which you may not be able to do alone, which can help you to progress faster.
